If you’re like us, or most literate Americans who grew up in the last 50 years, you probably fondly remember the greatest creation of Donald Sobol, a computer in tennis shoes, Leroy “Encyclopedia” Brown. We were saddened to learn today of the death of Mr. Sobol last week in Miami. Mr. Sobol, who was 87, created the iconic Brown, his friend and sidekick, Sally Kimball, and nemesis Bugs Meany. He was a master of creating mysteries that were not immediately obvious to his juvenile readers but that were solvable by them. His books promoted reading among the otherwise uninterested, as well as critical thinking skills. Though the final book of original mysteries will be published this fall, we’re certain they will continue to remain popular for generations to come.
